Discovering natural gas has spurred energy experts and policy makers to start looking to natural gas in their pursuit of a wide range of goals: easing the impact of energy-price spikes, reducing dependence on foreign oil, lowering “greenhouse gas” emissions and speeding the transition to renewable fuels. Bedrock Energy Development, Denver, Colorado is on the cutting edge of development of domestic natural gas fields.
Almost everyone in the U.S. uses natural gas. The largest user is industry. It uses natural gas to produce electricity, and as a heat source to manufacture products. Fertilizer, photographic film, ink, glue, paint and plastics are a few of the items that have natural gas as an ingredient.
The availability of natural-gas generation enables us to be much more courageous in charting a transition to a low-carbon economy. New advancement in software and drilling equipment have helped production rise eleven percent in the past two years. This has driven prices down to a 6 year low and allowed producers to temporarily cut back on drilling and seek a new source.
Natural gas has played a huge supporting role in the United States energy supply. Almost all the cars and trucks in the United States are fueled by refined gasoline or diesel.
The natural-gas discoveries come as oil has become harder to find and more expensive to produce. The U.S. is increasingly reliant on supplies imported from the Middle East and other politically unstable regions. In contrast, 98% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. is produced in North America.
